How the Florida Bar App Could Save Your Spring Break

Spring break has arrived! For local businesses in Panama City Beach and other coastal cities throughout Florida, this signifies one of the most profitable times of the year. For law enforcement, it means making sure all hands are on deck to handle the spike in population, between vacationing families and students looking to cut loose for their seven days of freedom.

Police officers are going to be particularly harsh when it comes to underage drinking, rowdy behavior, and other activities associated with college-aged adults—particularly those who are under 21. For young adults, the responsibilities of adulthood are still hazy “sort-of” realities. Many of these students may still be children at heart—but the law will not treat them that way.

To help young people be aware of their rights, the Florida Bar has developed a mobile app aimed at our spring break visitors. Called the #JustAdulting app, it provides multiple resources and tools to help 18-year-olds or older get a better handle of their rights and the way Florida law can affect their lives. Specifically created with high school seniors in mind, the app was created to help young people make informed decisions with their future in mind.

Ramón Abadin, the President of the Florida Bar, noted that many high schoolers are used to slaps on the wrist for crimes that could endanger their future as an adult—even if they only turned 18 recently. Crimes like using fake IDs, drinking underage, or driving under the influence all carry major consequences when charged as an adult.

The app could potentially keep teens from making poor decisions by confronting them with the reality of the penalties. It can also help teens navigate the Court system, how to speak to police officers, and what rights are afforded to the arrested or accused. Our firm supports any efforts to keep young people aware of their rights and help them make the right decisions for their future.
